Why People Quit & What to Do if You're Close to Doing So

The world we live in doesn't glamorize steady, consistent progress. Whether we admit it or not, whether we know it or not: we humans like to play the comparison game. We've heard friends brag about weight loss, we see latest workout fads and notice the Instagram account with a six-pack and a butt we want. Often times we compare ourselves to lottery winners, not wanting to admit that what it took for them to get what we want isn't what it will take for us to get it. More often than not, people quit right before the results show up. This all stems from a disconnect between reality and our expectations. Much of this feeling can be avoided by setting the stage for what to expect, before getting a reality check, or committing to something that is set up to fail from the beginning. If you've felt like you weren't seeing the results you expected, felt like you'll never climb the hill, or that your desired outcome seems unattainable you fall into the 90% of people getting into health & fitness, myself included. This is where loving the process comes in. When you feel like quitting or that training isn't paying off in the ways you expected, count your small victories. How much more energy you have throughout the day, putting on socks and shoes is getting easier, exercise has provided a foundation for routine to get other things done, your pants fit differently. These "small" victories put into perspective what kind of game were playing. I've found myself that often when I am struggling with the "is it all worth it?" question, I'm in the midst of a breakthrough that hasn't quite revealed itself just yet.
